Tip: Shop well-known, trustworthy websites.

Emergency scam

You get a call from a relative with a sudden emergency who needs you to send money right now.

Tip: Don't react, respond — ask questions to verify it's really your family, and check with another relative.

Imposter scam

Someone poses as a friend, family member, or credible figure and tricks you into sending money.

Tip: Keep your personal information under lock and key.

Rental scam

Scammers exploit busy rental periods with listings posted at unrealistically low prices.

Tip: Use verified rental websites and never send money through untrusted methods.

Employment scam

A 'boss' sends a cheque for work-related expenses, then asks you to send some of it back — the cheque bounces and you're responsible for the full amount.

Tip: If you've been sent a cheque, wait for it to clear before sending any money — clearing can take 10-14 days.

Lottery or sweepstakes scam

An unexpected “Congratulations, you've won!” message targeting lottery or sweepstakes dreams.

Tip: Legitimate contests contact you directly through official channels — always verify before sending money.
